Collection: Indian block print fabrics
Our new colorful collection of quilted toiletry bags has been made with cottons printed using the block print technique. The opportunity to tell you more about this ancestral printing process which comes to us from India!
What is the block print technique?
Block printing consists of printing patterns in a carved block of wood (from rosewood), on cotton, linen and silk by exerting hand pressure on the block. The imprint left by the block in the fabric gives rise to slight irregularities in the printing of patterns and colors. These small imperfections give a unique appearance to each piece and add to the charm of these fabrics!
Block print, a technique born in India
The traditional process of hand printing on richly colored textiles has been practiced in Rajasthan for around 500 years. Block printing was introduced to the Jaipur region by the Chipa community, located in the village of Bagru, an area famous for its vegetable dyes and mud-resistant prints. The art of block printing has been passed down from generation to generation within families and communities.
The original Bagru print style traditionally uses floral, leaf and geometric designs on cottons and silks. However, in recent decades, Western designers have worked closely with these local artisans to create Indo-Western designs inspired by art and nature.
